How to Deal With Heartburn

Heartburn is one of the most annoying and uncomfortable things to have. The burning sensation can leave you feeling uneasy for a long period of time and most people do not know that there is more than one way off easing the burn.

 

Although medicine is the easiest and most convenient way to help with heartburn, there are also other things that can reduce the burn. If you suffer from constant heartburn please consult with your doctor or contact your health insurance provider.

 

Here a few methods that you could use to relieve your heartburn:

 

Baking Soda

Baking Soda might sound like a silly idea, but it’s actually an effective way of reducing acid levels in the stomach. Baking soda is an odd way to relieve heartburn but it’s an option to keep in mind when nothing else is available. It’s a non acid based product which means that by drinking it, you can reduce and neutralize the acid levels in your stomach, which essentially will reduce the burn and get rid of that awful feeling in your lower chest.

 

Heartburn Medicine

It’s pretty easy to get hold of heartburn medicine and is probably one of the convenient ways to deal with it. Heartburn medicine can come in three forms, which are H2 Blockers, Antacids and Proton pump inhibitors. All three types will help with heartburn but do it in different ways. Antacids are usually used to neutralize the acids in your stomach, which will stop the burns. Proton pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are used to reduce the acid made by the stomach, which effectively reduces the burn. H2 Blockers also reduce the acid levels in the stomach to help with the burn but do it in different ways.

 

All the types are effective but it’s up to the user to decide which one suits them better.

 

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a home remedy that can be used to deal with heartburn. It’s not the first thing you would think of but it works. Lemon juice contains lots of nutrients that help with heartburn. It’s not as instant as some of the other ways of dealing with heartburn, as it could take some time for it to work. Sometimes you may have to drink more than one glass for it to work effectively, but it’s a remedy that you can always go to if you do not have many options.

 

This method used to be used for people who do not have heartburn so often. If you have heartburn on a regular basis, this method would be very harsh on the teeth as lemon juice is slightly acidic.

 

Carrots, Potatoes, Cabbage etc.

Eating the wrong food can be catastrophic when it comes to heartburn. If you have food that is high in acids, it can make the situation worse for you and you’ll have to deal with the burn for much longer. There are many types of food that can reduce the acids in your stomach to ease the pain. Some of these are carrots, potatoes, cabbage, apples, green beans and bananas. Bananas and apples are good for heartburn as you can have them on the go. Bananas in particular contain a natural Antacid that acts like a defense against acid reflux.

 

Chewing Gum

Having gum may seem like it’s not going to do anything for your heartburn but it actually can help. If you chew gum you automatically produce more saliva then you normally do. How does this help? Well, the excess saliva that is produced will eventually go down to your stomach. Essentially the excess saliva will wash down the acid in your stomach by diluting it, which would reduce the burn.
